When Earth crumbled to dust once more after one of its darkest hours, innumerable human souls died, casting their inherent psychic energy into the planet's bossom. The energy accumulated in so-called ley lines, sources of mystic energy thay connect a number of nexus points, nodes where they cross and converge each other. These lines of energy cannot be seen, smelled or tasted by common people, but can be tapped by those who learned to mold and shape the energy according to their needs. Magic had been discovered. Additionally, the ley lines' connecting points created Rifts in time and space, which attracted all kinds of extraterrestrial beings to Earth. Thenceforward, the planet's surface is not only inhabitated by man and the remainder of their high-tech societies, but also by all kinds of creatures: demons, gods and other powers and riff-raffs.

Rifts is based on Palladium's rules. By extending the Palladium fantasy world to the so-called Megaverse®, players are virtually unlimited in their possibilities and adventures. Rifts introduces countless professions and races. If players should ever reach a point in one of the worlds where they feel confined or limited in their scope, they simply leap through one of the Rifts and enter a new world with new laws and adventures.
