Dungeons & Dragons

Probably no other RPG has influenced so many role players, movie makers and artists as Dungeons & Dragons has. Although the title of the first RPG being available in public is often claimed by other games, it was certainly D&D which first attracted the masses of players rather than small numbers of pimple faced students only. Traditionally, D&D is based on a simple set of rules, which may be extended and enhanced by numerous additional rule sets. Although these rules have grown more complex in each successive edition, they haven't been changed at all very much. D&D's success was too great to be threatened by brand-new, contradicting rules.

Although the rules may be regarded as isolated and generic, several official settings and backgrounds were published over the year, all of which matched perfectly with the basic rules. These settings cover different fantasy campaigns, like Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance, as well as Spelljammer's and Planescape's multidimensional explorations of the Multiverse.
